Ken and Donna Pascoe, owners of Gladiator, targeted the first marlin of the season over the Christmas period.  On 3 January Donna was on a blue Marlin at the Nine Pin Trench and played it for 35 minutes.  Unfortunately 20 metres from the boat it slipped the hooks and swam off.  Rather gutted that the first marlin of the season had swum away, Ken and Donna were determined to catch another one.  On 5 January they hooked up on a striped marlin and successfully boated the fish.  This was weighed at Whangarei Deep Sea Anglers Club and went 96.60kg.  This marlin qualified for the NZ record of the First Weighed Marlin for the Season.
